Can yoghurt really help the hair and scalp?

Nutritionists swear by the health benefits that yoghurt brings to the table. Yoghurt is super rich in nutrients, probiotics and protein; basically, regular consumption results in some profound health benefits. Plus, it is quite delicious.

However, recently yoghurt’s use as a hair and scalp treatment product has gained much traction. Yoghurt’s use for hair treatment originates in the Middle Eastern tradition. The word around the web is that this fermented milk product helps restore hair and boosts growth, among other things.

So, how helpful is yoghurt really, and how is it used on the hair?

The benefits

The most popular usage of yoghurt on hair is as a hair mask, also known as deep conditioner. Promoters of yoghurt-based hair treatments assert that the protein and lactic acid in yoghurts are most responsible for the strengthening boosts.

As hair is made mostly of proteins like keratin, the proteins in the yoghurt lend their strength to the hair and help strengthen the strands. In short, there is less hair loss and breakage as a result of yoghurt treatments.

The lactic acid in the yoghurt offers invigorated growth of hair follicles and cleanses the scalp of dead skin cells.

Patch test first

Before you go ahead and start using a yoghurt mask to condition your hair, it is crucial you test a small amount on your skin first.

Rub the yoghurt you were going to use on a tiny bit of your forearm and leave it on for half an hour.

If your skin shows signs of allergic reaction like redness, itchiness or stinging, do not use. Instead, contact your hairstylist or your dermatologist for a more suitable alternative.

Using yoghurt on the hair

Yoghurt works best as a hair mask. The routine is rather straightforward:

  1. Mix 3 parts yoghurt to 1 part coconut oil to form a soft paste.
  2. Apply the mask to clean, dry hair. Massage into the roots and then work your way to the rest of the hair.
  3. Leave on for 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water. If you wish, use a mild shampoo right after.

Repeat at least once every two weeks for the best results.

Other ingredients you can use to enhance the beneficial qualities of the hair mask:

  • Lemon
    Add a squeeze of lemon (or lime) to the yoghurt mask to help fight off dandruff.
  • Honey
    A small amount of honey can help add hydration to the beneficial qualities offered by a yoghurt mask.
  • Egg
    If you suffer from damaged hair, mixing in a whole egg to a yoghurt mask can not only add an extra touch of protein but several minerals and nutrients that can maximise the restorative qualities of the treatment.
  • Aloe Vera
    In addition to offering extra softness, adding aloe vera to yoghurt can help nourish hair follicles to a higher degree.
